Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal scaling and root planing is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease (periodontitis) and prevent it from progressing. This treatment goes beyond a regular dental cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline and smooth the tooth roots to help the gums reattach to the teeth.

When Is It Needed?

Scaling and root planing is typically recommended when signs of gum disease are present, such as:

• Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
• Persistent bad breath
• Deep gum pockets (4mm or more)
• Loose teeth or gum recession

If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

What to Expect

Scaling – Plaque and tartar are carefully removed from above and below the gumline using specialized tools.

Root Planing – The roots of the teeth are smoothed out to eliminate bacteria and allow the gums to heal and reattach.

The procedure may be done over one or more visits, often under local anesthesia for your comfort. We may also recommend an antibacterial rinse or localized antibiotic therapy to enhance healing.
