Periodontal surgery is a specialized dental procedure used to treat advanced gum disease (periodontitis) when non-surgical treatments—like scaling and root planing—are no longer effective. The goal is to restore the health of your gums, protect the supporting structures of your teeth, and prevent tooth loss.

When Is Periodontal Surgery Needed?

You may be a candidate for periodontal surgery if you have:

• Deep gum pockets that don’t respond to cleanings
• Bone loss around the teeth
• Receding gums or exposed roots
• Loose teeth due to advanced gum damage
• Infections or abscesses in the gums

Left untreated, these conditions can lead to permanent tooth loss and may affect your overall health.

Types of Periodontal Surgery

Depending on your needs, your periodontist may recommend:

1. Flap Surgery (Pocket Reduction Surgery) – Gums are gently lifted to remove deep tartar and smooth bone surfaces. The tissue is then repositioned snugly around the teeth to reduce pocket depth.
2. Gum Grafting – Used to treat gum recession, gum grafting involves taking tissue (often from the roof of the mouth) and attaching it where the gum has receded, protecting the roots and improving appearance.
3. Bone Grafting / Regeneration – If bone loss has occurred, bone graft material or special proteins may be used to help regenerate lost bone and stabilize the teeth.
4. Crown Lengthening – Exposes more of the tooth by removing excess gum or bone tissue. This may be done for restorative or cosmetic purposes.
